Thornapple Metal Designs is a collaboration between Dave’s love of working with metal and Julie’s artistic way of life.

Being raised on a dairy farm, Dave was always working with metal as a necessity in fixing things. Then he started doing welding in high school and always had projects of one sort or another involving metal going on.

He had his eye on a plasma cutting machine, but with double businesses of dairy farming and providing bear bait to hunters, time was an issue. In 2020 life changed. He sold the cows and although still providing both hound and bait sitting bear hunts, quit the bear bait business. With this came the purchase of a plasma machine.

Now he is making art, signs of his own design, custom signs for clients, panels for porches, firepits, custom machine parts, etc. with his plasma cutter.

Julie is hands on helping out with designs, paint and color choices, etc. She is a lifelong oil painter and was used to painting on most any type of surface besides canvas fine art.

The pieces created here are from start to finish. From sheets of bare metal being cut on the plasma machine, the rough edges are ground off, then entire pieces sand blasted, and then the finishing paint by us.

We did a few shows to start out with showing our work off for sale. Also, we have pieces for sale at various places in Wisconsin. These include The Cabin Store in Danbury WI, The Cozy Countryside Cabin in Stanley WI, Colonial Nursery in Ladysmith WI carries our garden stakes, pumpkin and hummingbird pieces, Meadowbrook Cranberry Gift Shop Exeland WI and The Winter Greenhouse Winter WI and Bush & Gilles Furniture Ladysmith and Spooner, WI.
